To obtain optimal defocus estimates, we compare the amount of contrast at each level of detail (i.e. spatial frequency) in a particular natural image patch to the amounts that are characteristic of different focus errors. The characteristic amounts depend on the properties of natural scenes, and the optics, sensors, and noise of the imaging system. We obtain absolute, signed estimates of the focus error from image data alone.  Estimates can be computed efficiently (~1 millisecond). Performance is accurate and precise.
